New look, new year! (Please don’t read this blog with Internet Explorer. Shut that thing down! We haven’t figured out why the layout screws up so badly in IE!)

It’s been a very hectic December, hence my absence from the blog. This morning in my Facbeook newsfeed, I saw quite a few people who seemed as relieved as me that 2012 is finally over. I couldn’t agree more. It was a hard year – at least, much harder than I had expected.

I don’t know what I was expecting, exactly, but my journey to “rehabilitate” back into society with a career and a home seemed to run into obstacles constantly throughout 2012. It took me two more months than I planned to even move to England, and from there it was seriously like one delay just pushed something else to be delayed, broken, or on strike. I was ready to give up. Then the year ended, thankfully.

2012 kind of messed around with some of my goals, and I’m being harsh on myself by not reflecting on the year and the way it turned out. The only thing that I really love about 2012 is the time I had to spend with family and friends. I had a lot of time to hang out with my mom and I went on fantastic trips with friends / to see friends.

So I can honestly say I’m really looking forward to 2013. It feels like a clean break with the past, of broken ovens, a horrible landlord (no doubt he’ll still drive us crazy until our lease ends), missing sofa legs, missing shipments, missed job opportunities, sad days when I miss family and friends in Canada, etc.

A few select goals that I thought I’d share on the blog –

  • Travel to two – three more new countries
  • Read what’s on my bookshelves and not buy any books until the year is halfway over!
  • Actually start training for a half marathon in April, for a race in Autumn
  • Follow a more regimented plan to get my blogging and social media in order
  • Keep a good sleeping schedule – those dark circles under my eyes freak me out every time I look at my reflection on the train in the Tube!

Happy New Year!

xoxo

How We Celebrated Our 10th Anniversary

All right, all right. I’ve been lazy about my blogging, but I’ve been busy!! I had to get a haircut (traumatizing) and my brows done (excellent) and take care of business around here for the past couple of weeks.

The point is, Alex and I celebrated our 10 year anniversary this past Monday. We went for a delicious meal at NOPI, the flagship restaurant of my favourite London restauranteur, Yotam Ottolenghi. The starters and little plates we had were fantastic, but the mains were a little shy of amazing. Nevertheless, I loved the experience because we hardly ever eat out at fancy restaurants these days, so it was a special treat for us.

I’ll get to the good part. For our 10th anniversary, Alex thoughtfully gave me 10 little gifts leading up to the day!

1. A little owl ornament I really liked from a shop in Bristol (because it looks like my mom).
2. A glasses case from Cath Kidston because my current one is from grade 6 and has a huge crack in it. My actual glasses case for my glasses was carelessly left behind on our Vancouver – Beijing flight last March.
3. A pack of all butter shortbread cookies from M&S with Starbucks cards to replace the one I lost recently.
4. FLOWERS! This is probably the third time I’ve received flowers in our 10 year relationship.
5. My favourite Comté from France (available at Borough Market in London).
6. One of the bread baking books on my Amazon wishlist.
7. Membership to the Victoria & Albert Museum, my favourite museum in London, and the one with the most beautiful café in the world.
8. On our actual anniversary, I got a lovely card.
9. A jar of salted caramel sauce from Ladurée, because I only like macarons for the salted caramel fillings.
10. A Starbucks Christmas ornament because we’re going to be celebrating Christmas next!

Ah yes, you’re wondering what I gave Alex? The answer is…Nothing.

I wrote a card though?

I really have been very busy…

More updates to come as the dust has started to settle, so I will have a chance to breathe in the coming week!

Yesssss, it has vitamins!

Happy November!

We’ve been really busy for the past couple of weekends, hence the delay in wallpapering. We have taken small trips both weekends to visit Alex’s family around England. At Grandma’s, we were fed hearty stews and roasts and fry-ups while I curled up with Reader’s Digests and drank tea (I know, how old am I really?), and in the ‘West Country’ this past weekend, we explored little seaside towns and ate fresh local crabs, mussels, and fish. Good times!

This won’t be a long post, because I’m trying to get to bed. It’s going to be a very, very busy week because – BREAKING NEWS – I’m going back into the work force on Monday! Yikes. I hate being the new kid on the block, so I’m looking at my new job with trepidation. However, the job itself should be really fun and different, so I’ll keep you updated!

Enjoy the wallpaper, featuring my favourite savoury toast condiment!
